On a cool Autumn day, I paddled my kayak down the Delaware River to Pier 82 and came face to face with a childhood memory. Aside from the fact that we both began our lives in the same year (1952), I have a wonderful recollection of spending a day onboard the S.S. United States during one of the times that she was berthed in New York City. In those days, it was possible to go onboard any of the great liners and visit on the day they sailed, just for the price of a small donation to the Seaman's Benevolent Fund. I remember visiting just about every inch of that incredible ship that wasn't "off-limits". Although I was not able to go onboard this time, I did get a view of the ship that was truly remarkable.
